Christina Nastasi is a young artist from Long Island, New York. She began expressing her love for the arts at a very young age. Born in 1987, as a child she spent most of her time drawing and involving herself in anything creative. Art was always an important part of her life, something she always found herself doing. “Whether it was to pass the time or subconsciously let out my frustrations I can’t say, but I always had a pencil in my hand.”
Her inspiration for her artwork comes from a multitude of places. The more she is exposed to the world of art, the more stimulated she has recently become. “Something such as the thickness of a line that an artist uses in their work and why makes me have a deeper appreciation for their pieces and the art world in general. This in turn has become an inspiration for me”, says Christina. Emotional responses to visual experiences, symbolism, perception and imagination are the major elements used in Christina’s work. Whether its something that’s induced by music or a memory from her personal life, it’s always very rewarding for her to see her thoughts put down on paper or onto a canvas. She says, “I like to have a visual image of the inner workings of my mind. Other pieces evolve from conversations I hear muttered around me. The result is a product of my mind’s process of it all.”
Though she has completed multiple pieces in various mediums, such as charcoal and acrylics, she has recently concentrated on watercolors and ink on various papers. This allows her to be loose her work, creating lines that alone, separate from the entire image, can tell a story. The free flow sense of her brush strokes and how she divides each part of a painting is parallel to what she explains is her perception of the world. She believes nothing is ever as precise or clear as it may seem to us. Everything has multiple layers and meanings. This is what is exuded in Christina Nastasi’s work with her careful choice of color and line.
