Mike Sheldrake has created a surfboard that is pretty unique and unconventional. Upon begining his project, Sheldrake turned to the internet for research. He looked to aerospace blogs for insight into the strength-to-weight ratio as it relates to design. He eventually found a 3-D modeling software to design a snap together, hollow model with intersecting ribs for a cardboard-core surfboard. The surfboard is made out of paper-corrugated slats wrapped in fiberglass cloth hardened with epoxy resin.
Sheldrake admits that there is still a long way to go with his cardboard creation. “There are lots of weight issues and laminating problems and just the economic viability of a production facility still needs to be worked out,” explained Sheldrake. “But I’m onto some cool ideas, and half the fun is figuring all that stuff out.”

Hey there,
This may sound batty, so batton your hatches, but I’ve been dreaming of this design for the past few years. Granted the hexagonal hive skeleton only came to me this past year after googling hollow surfboards and reading about Tom Blake, but a sea-thru core so you could see the sea was my intention. Kudos! to you for realizing a dream of mine and please forgive me if I lament the sheer serendipity of our designs. I too have quite a few surf oriented designs in this and other areas of interest and would be willing to collaborate, as I sea great potential in your inventive endeavor. I am located in Morro Bay, CA and surf as well. Perhaps there are no accidents, just a series of infinite coincidences. Sea Through Surf , Sincerely, AdrianBC 2008
