TalentDatabase’s Renate Ikinger didn’t start out as a paper artist. Like so many of us she had a “day job” as a web designer and programmer that paid the bills. When Ikinger turned 40, she decided she had enough of that life and was ready to do her crafting full-time.
“Books always played a big part in my life, and when I realized I could make them by myself it was a miracle,” she said.
Initially she relied on the traditional methods but soon discovered a talent for making journals that look as if they were made in ancient times.
“I think nature plays a big part. I’m fascinated by ancient cultures since I was little.”
Ikinger is fascinated by antiquated designs that look as if they might hold some mysterious secrets of their own. er journals are all handmade, save for a few tools that she uses, the bone folder, cutter, ruler and sewing machine.
Hand tooling, amulet embellishments and super soft leather are all features on her little treasures, along with hand cut pages that lend authenticity to the aged quality.
Ikinger will occasionally custom make special orders for friends and long-time customers but this depends on what materials are available and the complexity of the designs. The time involved in making the journals varies and Ikinger admits she spends most of her time on the designs themselves.
