I frequently sport brightly colored graphic tees from Urban Outfitters. The fierce genius behind these designs is freelance graphic artist Karen Richter. Her richly colorful art designs invoke psychedelic doodles from the 1960’s. Her impressive client list goes beyond mainstream MTV. She had done work for record companies and magazines in mainstream circulation. Karen has also managed to design totes, tees and other graphic related items for Urban Outfitters. Her designs are smart, edgy and detailed. Indie kids eat them up and I find them amusing and carefree.
Her clothing line, Blood is the New Black, launched in 2004 and has grown to include other artists designing graphics for her. Graduating from Parsons School of Design (Illustration) and Columbia University (BA in Art History), Karen has found success in the underground, trendy atmosphere of rock fashion. I should also mention that this design diva won the Samsung Contest we posted awhile back on TalentSpeaks. Check out her website for her amazing designs and of course Blood is the New Black website. But don’t fret if your Urban Outfitters is not part of your local retail provider…..here is a list of stores you can catch her amazing designs displayed on anything and everything: Karmaloop, Beautiful Decay, Fred Flare, Delias, Hot Topic, Trash and Vaudeville, Mini Mini Market, Black Market, Red Light. Keep an eye on this girl, she is going places!
